Bristol University Sustainability Team is a grass roots student organisation co-ordinated by a body of students concerned about the converging crisis’s of the 21st century; these being: climate change, peak oil, the systematic destruction of biodiversity, increased social and financial polarisation, economic imperialism, and the general wastage of resources in all sectors of modern culture. Sustainability necessitates a holistic viewpoint of the world and takes into account all the issues that affect humanity’s and the environment’s future state of well being. The basic premises lie in the fact that the world’s resources are A) finite, and B) that the worlds systems are interdependent and totally inseparable. From this it is clear, perpetual consumption and destruction make a prosperous future impossible. As a concerned body we take it upon ourselves to act on our convictions rather than becoming just another one of the million armchair critics out there. We are empowering ourselves and other by doing whatever it is that we can do in our local university community to set the world to rights. We know that our concerns are not enough, global problems need global solutions and therefore we have to aim to bring these issues into the public eye. We plan to do this through film screenings, guest lectures, workshops, art and any other means within our ability. However knowledge is not enough either, to change the world, cultural norms, governments and people, have to change too. People often want to but don’t know how or don’t have the opportunity to. This is where we have to jump in to help get the job done. There are a million different potential projects and what we achieve is in the hands of our members’ creativity and efforts’. Some projects already in the pipeline include, Farmers Markets, Student Allotments, Student Housing Energy Reduction Schemes, Tool Sharing, Bike Fixing Workshops, Film Making, ………………….. Hope fully the list will go on and on in the coming years.
